MOTHERHOOD: Safe Sleep With HALO SleepSack Swaddle

PLEASE NOTE!
Swaddling is recommended by some experts and not by others. As a parent, you need to do what makes you feel comfortable. The Saving Asian always recommends consulting your trusted health-care provider(s).

When our little soybean was born 3 months and 1 week ago today, I remember Zac and I swaddling her just like the nurses taught us - nice and snug, so that she would feel safe and get a good nights' sleep. Every new mom's dream is a baby that sleeps peacefully through the night. Once baby is sleeping Mom would check on them periodically to see if they are okay. Making sure babies are sleeping safe is HALO's thing! When we were introduced to HALO SleepSack Swaddle, we never looked back. You’ll never lose sleep worrying about your baby not having covers on them, getting tangled up in them or having them over their faces.

When Bill Schmid lost his daughter to Sudden Infants Death Syndrome (SIDS) in 1991 he wanted to create a safe sleep environment for babies to help ensure other families would not have to endure the same tragedy. He formed HALO Innovations and created the HALO SleepSack. Since 2003, the American Academy of Pediatrics has suggested using wearable blankets as a SIDS prevention measure and the HALO SleepSack has become America’s leading wearable blanket and the first choice of hospitals nationwide.

It is recommended that parents keep ALL loose bedding out of the crib: pillows, quilts, blankets and even toys have the potential to suffocate your child. You also don't want your child to get too hot which large blankets can easily do. The HALO Sleepsack Swaddle can keep your baby warm without the risk of suffocation.

The HALO SleepSack Swaddle has so many factors that were thought through. The zipper on the sack is inverted; unzips from the bottom up. Because of this design, you can change a diaper without ever fully unzipping the sack! On the inside of one of the adjustable strap are instructions for correct infant swaddling. There’s also a disclaimer that lets you know when to stop swaddling (ie: baby can break out of the swaddle or roll over)

The International Hip Dysplasia Institute has approved the HALO SleepSack as "Hip Healthy!" Unfortunately, some sleep products on the market today can actually harm your baby by limiting hip movement and potentially causing hip deformation.

The HALO SleepSacks Swaddle come in different sizes and patterns, so it’s pretty easy to find one that will comfortably and safely fit your baby. You can also choose between three fabric options: cotton, fleece and muslin. When choosing a swaddle, it's more important to choose a size depending on length and weight measurements rather than age.

ALWAYS
• Place baby to sleep on his or her back at naptime and at night time.
 • Use a crib that meets current safety standards with a firm mattress that fits snugly and is covered with only a tight-fitting crib sheet.
• Offer a pacifier when putting baby to sleep. If breastfeeding, introduce pacifier after one month or after breastfeeding has been established.
• Breastfeed, if possible, but when finished, put your baby back to sleep in his or her separate safe sleep area alongside your bed.
• Room share, but don’t bed share. Bed sharing can put a child at risk of suffocation.

NEVER
• Never put your baby to sleep on any soft surface (adult beds, sofas, chairs, water beds, quilts, sheep skins etc.)
• Never dress your baby too warmly for sleep; keep room temperature 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit.
• Never allow anyone to smoke around your baby or take your baby into a room or car where someone has recently smoked.

The HALO SleepSack Swaddle is a one stop shop for swaddling without having to spend hours figuring out the art of swaddling (you're either really good or really terrible!) Everly was able to bust out of swaddle blankets pretty easily when she was a few weeks old, even though Zac is a pro at tight swaddling. She's our little Houdini. The Floral Ombre Bohemian design is very lightweight and breathable which keeps Everly cool throughout the night - perfect for the Spring months!

When her arm are not wrapped inside the SleepSack, the wings get bunched up (as pictured above) which I don't think bothers Everly as much. When detaching the velcro to change her diaper it is slightly loud, but nothing like a noise machine to drown it out. The HALO SleepSack Swaddle gives you the option of wrapping arms in or out, depending on baby’s preference. This makes transitioning into a SleepSack much easier, as the baby is already used to the looser sack design instead of a tight swaddle. The only thing more important than a good night’s sleep is a safe night’s sleep.
